Perfume guide - what do the names stand for?

Eau this and eau that... It can be difficult to keep all the terms separate when it comes to fragrances and perfumes, so here's a quick perfume guide to explain what the most common terms and abbreviations mean.

Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5% - 15% fragrance essence. EDT is a more subdued fragrance compared to EDP or Parfum. However, Eau de Toilette is cheaper than the variants that have higher concentrations of fragrance essence. If you don't want your perfume aura to take over the room and potentially disturb other people, this is a safe bet - EDT products last for different lengths of time, but you can expect the scent to linger for at least 3 hours.
Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15% - 20% fragrance essence. EDP is a step above EDT and has a more powerful scent that lasts significantly longer but also costs more. The scent of an Eau de Parfum is usually expected to last for at least 5-6 hours, and often up to 8 hours, which makes this variant optimal for, for example, a working day at the office.
Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2% - 4% fragrance essence. A weaker version of Eau de Toilette that lasts up to 2 hours. Great if you want to freshen up before a meeting, a dinner or a night out.
Eau Fraiche: 1% - 3% fragrance essence. The mildest variant on the market. Eau Fraiche is refreshing and lasts for about 1 hour.
Parfum: 20% - 30% fragrance essence. The strongest and most expensive variant on the market. Parfum can have a shelf life of up to 24 hours.
Notes: Fragrance notes are the building blocks that make up a perfume. Some examples of common notes are vanilla, apple and bergamot. A fragrance that you spray on your body goes through three phases characterized by different notes. Which notes they are depends on the perfume.
Top notes: The first impression you get when you spray the fragrance. Top notes last between 5-15 minutes.
Heart notes: The second stage in the life of a fragrance. Heart notes last between 20-60 minutes.
Base notes: Probably the most important phase as it lasts the longest. The base notes usually last for over 6 hours.
Projection: Have you ever had the experience of sitting across from another person at a dinner party, for example, and felt that person's perfume almost pressed against you, filling up the entire room? This is called projection.
Sillage: If a person walks past you and you can smell a clear trace of their scent in the air, it means they have a large sillage. A distinction is made between whether the perfume creates an aura around you (projection) versus the trail a scent leaves behind when you move (sillage).
