Padel, or paddle tennis as it is also known, is a racket sport that can be seen as a cross between tennis and squash. It is played on a court with two halves separated by a net, just like in tennis. However, the walls that surround the court can also be used in the game. Padel is usually played in doubles, i.e. two against two.

Where does padel tennis come from?

There have long been similar games practiced since the 1920s, but padel as we know and play it today originated in Mexico, specifically in the city of Acapulco in 1969. The origin of padel is therefore usually said to be Mexico.
In Sweden, padel has grown enormously in recent years and right now there are over 500 padel halls around Sweden and just over 1500 padel courts.

Padel racket

A padel racket does not have strings as in tennis and squash, for example. A padel racket is usually made of composite material where the hitting surface itself has a certain number of holes in it. Since there are no strings on a padel racket, this means that the ball hit does not have the same force and it becomes a lazier hit than in tennis.

A padel racket normally has a thickness of 36 or 38mm and there are 3 different shapes of padel rackets, round, diamond-shaped and drop-shaped padel rackets.

Most people have the best control with a round rack, so it is usually recommended for beginners. More advanced players are often seen with a diamond-shaped padel racket. On a diamond-shaped racket, the best hitting point is higher up and the player then gets more power in their strokes but with this has a racket with less control, therefore they are more suitable for advanced players who have more control in their game. The rackets that are shaped like a drop are an intermediate and usually recommended for medium and advanced players.
