Lancôme was founded in 1935 in France by Guillaume d'Ornano and his business partner Armand Petitjean as a perfume house with the ambition to offer French elegance and luxury through its fragrances. The name 'Lancôme' was chosen with care and was inspired by the forest of Lancosme, located in the picturesque Indre Valley in the heart of the Brenne region. It was Guillaume's wife, Elisabeth d'Ornano, who suggested the name, and the beauty of the surrounding roses became a symbol of the brand - a single golden rose symbolizing Lancôme's sophisticated style and timeless beauty.
At the 1935 Brussels World Fair, Lancôme introduced its first five perfumes: Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquête, Kypre and Tropiques. These fragrances captured the essence of French luxury and set the tone for the brand's future success. However, Armand Petitjean realized that the future of Lancôme lay not only in perfumes, but also in skincare and cosmetics. In 1936, Lancôme launched its first skincare product, Nutrix, an 'all-round repair cream' that quickly became a pioneering product in the beauty industry. Subsequently, Lancôme expanded its range of make-up and skincare products, cementing its reputation as one of the world's leading beauty brands.
Lancôme's success is based on a combination of tradition, innovation and French luxury, making it an international symbol of elegance, beauty and quality.
